    Phil Dickie is a recipient of Australia's highest journalism award, a Gold Walkley, for his investigative journalism work leading to the Fitzgerald inquiry (The Commission of Inquiry into Possible Illegal Activities and Associated Police Misconduct). Following the inquiry, Phil Dickie became a special advisor to the newly formed Criminal Justice Commission, researching organised crime. He also completed research projects for the UN Commissioner for Human Rights and WWF International among others. His report "Rich Countries, Poor Water" surveying the parlous state of water supplies in the developed world has attracted extensive international media attention, as did a follow-up report on desalination. The WWF report Rich countries, poor water is one of the first comprehensive overviews of water issues in the developed world including Australia, Spain, Japan, and the UK, and the US.

    Among other endeavours, Phil Dickie has taught investigative journalism, investigated dubious property marketing practices for the State government, and established a reputation for environmental writing and consulting. His bestselling book The Road to Fitzgerald remains required reading on investigative journalism in universities around Australia.
