3 TIPS FROM ASIA'S TALENT LEADERS FOR TALENT RETENTION

Leading Asian Talent Directors from GSK, Dimension Data, Hay Group and SingTel joined me at the SP Jain Global School of Management, HR Conclave 2014 to explore new strategies for motivation and retention for the 21st Century.

Megatrends highlighted before our session by Zsolt Tokoli (Managing Partner of Ember Associates) included the internationalisation and digitisation of our workforce and the tools we use; the rise of the individual and the need for personalisation; the "internet of everything" including the growth context of 2.5 billion people already online and 5 billion more to come; the rise of mobile; and the need to adapt to the 6 screen world that we now live in...

Key learnings from our panellists included:

1. The need to focus on engagement vs. retention. Develop your team as individuals and provide meaningful work.
2. The role of HR and leadership development is being pushed down to frontline managers. Remember to train them to be able to assess for talent and to manage their team members for high performance.
3. Hire for attitude and train for skill and learning agility.


My favourite comment of the day came from Andreas Raharso, Director of the Hay Group who shared Xi Jinping's view's on Diversity: "It doesn't matter whether a cat is white or black, as long as it catches mice." It was interesting to note that when we consider the 7 drivers for corporate reputation (Fombrun, 1996) these initiatives related to retaining and motivating our people tie directly back to delivering on 4 of the reputation equity drivers of citizenship, workplace, leadership and governance - and if done effectively, can directly result in a positive impact on the other 3 reputation drivers - greater innovation, the delivery of outstanding products and services and improved economic performance.
